This is an update on the “siege of leningrad” black and white rough i’ve been working on. I’ve started adding in some colour over the top. I like the colours in the clouds and they come out nicer in print. Not too sure about the guy at the piano though…
Also be sure to check out some new work on my portfolio www.drawntothenorth.com

Been working really hard at this illustration today, I’m trying to push different composition ideas, and themes I usually struggle with such as buildings and hard materials (brick,glass, iron rods)
The brick texture on the back-wall of the building is painted rather than relying on texture images, edited and placed. Which is something id usually rely on so pleased with how that came out..
I’m gunna change the last bits I dont think are working, then I’ll lay down colour over the top using overlay/color layer mode.
This was a trick I’ve seen used by many professional digital illustrators and concept artists and its one I think ill carry on using for a while, as it helps me visualize whats actually working.
You can see this technique being used in Bobby Chiu’s creature design video. If you work digitally and are interested in learning a few tips or maybe a way to improve your work flow, i’d check out the first part of the video;

Also i’ve been practicing anatomy using a mixture of videos and andrew loomiss’ books, which you can actually download and read (as pdf’s) for free. If you struggle with anatomy as I sometimes do it is well worth checking out;

Other than that I’m currently coming up with new ideas for the re-designing of my website, my current one you can see here  http://www.drawntothenorth.com/

Keep checking back as ill be posting more updates on work, hopefully have some website designs well underway and ill keep finding useful/free resources for you all to use.

Cheers

Haven’t posted anything in a while, so here’s one of four illustrations I did for the lymphoma association. They asked for students to contribute some work for their cause by illustrating four of the “signs” of lymphoma. These were persistent lumps, itching, tiredness and sweating…
I struggled with the perspective on this, and managed to make guy napping look half-dead! So im going to go back and work on my fundamentals over the next few weeks by following cgsocietys anatomy body part series http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=375031 . In the thread they give links to master drawings, guidelines etc.
Also another source for anybody whose interested in digital art or even just tips on being more creative should check out feng zhu’s youtube channel. Some of his video’s are useful even if your not a digital artist, for example

Uni projects at the moment have stayed in the same vein in terms of looking at editorial articles but I’m looking more into New Scientist/Economist now rather than health/care related magazines. I’ll also try and upload more sketches and works in progress to here.
